I should have started this blog a year ago. Well, 15 months would be more precise. To make a long story short, it was December 2008, I had just finished my graduate program, and was feeling an almost "postpartum" depression. I was no longer a student. I had a job, money in my pocket, and, most importantly, free time. But rather than feeling elated I found myself lost. Years of being glued to books and microscopes had left me somewhat confused on what to do with my evenings and weekends.
I got to thinking about the hobbies I'd been interested in, but had put aside during school for lack of time or funds, and suddenly the world looked exciting and full of opportunity! I may not have known where to start, but rather than twiddle my thumbs any longer just thinking and fantasizing, I resolved to spend the 2009 pursuing my dreams, trying new things, and stepping out of my comfort zone. "Live every day as if it were my last", so to speak.
I called it the "Year of the Bean" (YotB). It was epic. Not just the experiences themselves, but just the amount I learned about myself, life...the kind of things that make you wonder if you were ever really "living" before you knew them.
So instead of blogging at the time, I'm starting it now. I suppose it's partly to keep last year fresh in my mind. Not to dwell, but to recall and incorporate. Plus, I have definitely discovered some amazing places, activities, and things to be passionate about. I hope to use this blog to tell people about the things that, for me, make life so grand. We're all looking for someone to share our experiences with, so thanks for reading, and welcome to the Life of the Bean.
